Know your business is a great one, but can’t seem to convince enough people?
That’s where hiring a Vancouver freelance writer will be one of the best investments you’ve ever made, whether it’s as a Web copywriter, press release writer, media kits writer or marketing copy writer.
Communication determines a lot. Without it, it’s like the tree that fell in the forest….
Did it make a noise, even though no one heard it?
The answer may never be agreed upon, but my take on it is this:
NO ONE HEARD IT, SO IT DOESN’T MATTER.
It’s like that with your business: You have to make sure you are heard, or it won’t matter.
YES, good writing can make a difference in sales!
The most successful marketers know that good writing can sell. I’ve written copy that sold double the expected volume of a promotion. (The closest competing product sold half of what we sold).
I’ve written letters that had immigration cases re-opened, and that doubled severance packages for layoffs of a major Canadian company.
The most common writing mistake I see has nothing to do with grammar and spelling.
#1 Worst copywriter mistake: Messages that talk about a company, and NOT about the customer.
#2 Worst copywriter mistake: Confusing readers with words they can’t understand, or will never take the time to read.
It is your copywriter’s responsibility to ask the right questions!
When writing for marketing, most businesses fail to leave out their competitive advantages, or they write for the wrong set of customers.
Your web site, brochures, shopping cart, even your bio needs to capture your audience, not your competitor’s, and not another business’s!
A good writer will always start with research, and will always have an inquisitive mind. I won’t lie – I annoyingly dig for answers about what makes you great before I start my prose!
“So, what makes Joyce special as a Vancouver copywriter?”
Great question!
I write with your marketing in mind. I find out everything I need to know about YOU and YOUR industry, before I put pen to paper (or, fingers to keyboard, I should say).
My writing communicates (or so I like to think!). What is communication? It is making sure the message gets heard.
The secret is telling your story well.
My background in journalism coupled with having obtained my degree in Communication has given me training to make a great story out of even the most mundane, boring things about a business. (To prove my point, I once wrote a press release about the delivery of exercise equipment by a moving company).

“Enough talk Joyce, let’s see results!”
So glad you brought it up!
One of the first lessons I learned in journalism school was from a once-great reporter nagging the words, “show me, don’t tell me” over and over again, enough times so that it stuck.
And so, I set up a portfolio on this site for you to see tons of my writing samples! (Oh yes, there’s plenty more where those all came from!)
Have fun viewing all the different styles of writing I do!
The type of writing I do extends into a few different areas of expertise:
SEO writing & blogging – for ranking well (I perform other SEO activities for other companies as well) and also for traffic generation by creating ‘sharable’ content (content users are likely to share on social media networks).
Marketing writing copy – bringing out the features and benefits of a product or service and communicating it in a way that will sell, especially online. This type of writing also requires a general idea of the design of the site or platform it will go on, so we can utilize the best space allowance and bring out the best points where there is room on the page.
Press releases & media kits– I went to journalism school and still have this talent hidden up my sleeve :) I enjoy writing stories that I know editors will look for (since I was once assigned to sift through all the so-called ‘junk’ that came through fax and e-mail every day at a newsroom office to find real newsworthy stories).
Landing page writing – this is for conversion optimization on specialized pages designed to get users to do one thing, and requires continual improvement with A/B testing. This type of writing is the most expensive and takes longer than 2 hours to write 500 words.
“But wait, let’s talk numbers.”
No problem! My writing is priced at the competitive rate of $85 – $100 per hour (depending on complexity). In general, I can write about 500 words in 2 hours or 350 words in 1.5 hours with up to 30 minutes of revision requests. Certain types of writing can go faster though, especially if they don’t require a lot of revision (such as digest-type blog articles). On the other hand, some types of writing can take longer, such as landing page writing described above, or topics that require extensive research.
